Contains fifty-six handwritten letters between Nathaniel Miller and numerous other correspondents including his future wife,
Ellen Carman, and Richard M. Jessup, who was a member of the San Francisco Committee of Vigilance of 1856. Also contains a
small amount of other material such as photographs, tax receipts, store accounts, newspaper clippings, bank drafts, and ephemera
from Miller's membership in The Associated Pioneers of the Territorial Days of California. Photographic material consists
of six albumen prints (2 1/2 x 3 1/2 in.) and five more recent copy photographs (b&w, 5 x 7 in. or smaller) depicting the
Miller family, homesteads, a man in a sailboat, and a man in a buckskin outfit with a rifle over his shoulder (possibly Nathaniel
Miller). The earliest document in the collection is a notarized letter, dated February 3, 1849 and signed by John L. Ireland,
granting power of attorney in California to William Floyd, Jr. The letter was countersigned by Floyd in San Francisco, California
on January 14, 1850, designating Nathaniel Miller to act in his stead.

Nathaniel Miller (September 15, 1815-December 23, 1896) was a storekeeper in San Francisco, California during the Gold Rush
era and assisted in forming the San Francisco Committee of Vigilance of 1851. Miller was born in Brookhaven, New York and
moved to California in 1849 where he amassed great wealth. In 1853, he returned to New York and was elected Supervisor of
Brookhaven in 1862. He died in Patchogue, New York in 1896.
